RuneScape Dragonwilds is not the RuneScape you remember. There's no clicking on trees for hours. No Grand Exchange. No tutorial island. Jagex took the RuneScape name and built a survival crafting game with it, and honestly, it works better than it has any right to.

The game exits early access on September 15, 2026, with a full launch across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. That's a wide platform spread, which immediately raises the question every mixed-platform group asks.

Does crossplay actually work?

What co-op looks like

Crafting uses a system that borrows from RuneScape's skill progression. You level up specific skills by doing them, which means one person in your group might become the dedicated builder while another focuses on weapons or cooking. It's a natural division of labor that makes groups feel like they're actually cooperating, not just existing in the same space.

The session structure is flexible. You can play for 30 minutes or three hours. Progress saves to your world, so you pick up where you left off.

What's changed since early access

The early access version launched in early 2026 with a smaller map and fewer dragon types. The full release adds new biomes, more crafting recipes, and a proper endgame loop around hunting elder dragons. Performance on Switch 2 has also improved significantly since the early builds.

The biggest change is the addition of public servers alongside private worlds. You can now join a shared world with strangers, which adds a light multiplayer element for people who don't have a regular group.

Should your group try it?

If your group likes survival games and everyone is on different platforms, Dragonwilds is one of the few options that doesn't force anyone to buy a new console. The crossplay support is genuine, the gameplay loop is solid, and it doesn't demand hours of grinding before the fun starts.
