Aion 2 Launches Globally This Month: What PvP Players Should Know

September 15, 2026by PickThe.Games

The original Aion had some of the best MMO PvP ever made

Back in 2008, Aion launched with a faction-based PvP system built around the Abyss, a contested zone where two player factions and an NPC faction fought for control. Fortress sieges, aerial combat, and open-world ganking made it a game that PvP players genuinely loved.

Then the usual happened. Updates shifted focus. The population declined. People moved on.

Now NCSoft is back with Aion 2, and it's launching globally this September on PC through Steam and NC's PURPLE client. Free-to-play. No regional lockouts. Servers in North America, Europe, and Asia.

What PvP looks like in Aion 2

The Abyss is back, rebuilt for cross-server Realm-vs-Realm warfare. Two factions fight over territory in massive battles that pull players from multiple servers into the same fight. If you played the original, you'll recognize the structure. If you didn't, think large-scale faction warfare where controlling territory matters.

On top of RvR, there are structured PvP modes. The Arena of Solitude is a 1v1 format with non-equalized gear, which means your time investment in gear progression actually shows up in duels. There are also 4v4 team arenas for smaller group play.

The world itself is built on Unreal Engine 5 and spans roughly 1,200 square kilometers. Preview coverage from Summer Game Fest called the visuals "some of the most gorgeous graphics ever seen in an MMO." That tracks with what NCSoft tends to deliver on the art side.

The monetization question

This is NCSoft. Players are right to be suspicious. But the studio has been explicit about one thing: PvP gear is not for sale. The cash shop is cosmetic-only. No stat boosts. No gear advantages. No power that money can buy.

How long that stays true is anyone's guess. But at launch, the playing field is level.

PvE is there too

Aion 2 isn't PvP-only. There are over 200 dungeons and a full PvE progression system. But the game's identity has always been its PvP, and this sequel leans into that.

The catch

It's PC-only at launch. No console versions have been announced. So if your group has console players, this one won't work for everyone.

Getting your group to try it

Free-to-play removes the biggest barrier. Nobody has to spend money to see if they like it. The harder part is getting a group to commit to trying something new.

That's where a quick vote helps. Set up a board on PickThe.Games, throw Aion 2 into the mix with whatever else your group is considering, and let everyone swipe. If the group is into it, you'll see it rise to the top. If not, at least you found out in two minutes instead of having a three-day argument about it.

You can also check other free multiplayer games if Aion 2 doesn't land with everyone. Or look at the best MMOs list for more options.
